Local Stakeholder Meeting #2 – City of Murcia

Bringing Stakeholders Together
On March 3, 2025, Murcia City Council hosted the second stakeholder group meeting for the JustGreen project. Held in the Abenarabi Multi-Purpose Building, the meeting brought together representatives from local government, academic institutions, environmental groups, and professional associations.
Setting the Scene for Green Goals
The session opened with an introduction by City Council representatives, outlining Murcia's goals for urban greening, environmental restoration, and climate resilience. Participants then shared insights on sustainable urban planning, conservation strategies, and policy collaboration. Key discussions focused on improving land-use management, integrating green infrastructure, and securing financial support for these initiatives.
Key Projects in Focus
Several ambitious projects were highlighted, including the Senda Verde del Riacho de la Morda and Senda Verde de la Puxmarina, which demonstrate how green infrastructure is integrated into Murcia's urban planning. Updates were also provided on the Murcia Río revitalization project, the Plan Foresta afforestation effort aimed at planting 50,000 trees, and the creation of the Metropolitan Park of the West to expand the city's green spaces.
Restoring Nature's Balance
Restoration efforts in river meanders, particularly the Vivillo meander, were discussed, emphasizing the removal of invasive species and the reintroduction of native plants. Collaborations with organizations like ANSE and Aguas de Murcia were recognized as vital for these projects' success.

Challenges in Agriculture
The meeting also addressed pressing concerns about the Huerta de Murcia's declining agricultural viability. Participants stressed the need for stronger municipal support for local farmers, especially in pruning, irrigation, and agricultural waste management. Concerns about environmental regulations, such as burning restrictions, were also raised.
Building Stronger Partnerships
Improved coordination between Murcia City Council and the regional government emerged as a priority, with calls for a permanent dialogue platform to enhance resource management and ensure the Huerta's integration into the city's urban planning. Climate resilience, ecological connectivity, and sustainable mobility were identified as key focus areas.

Tackling Desertification
Concerns about desertification in the Murcia Valley were discussed, with participants emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable forest management and reforestation programs adapted to changing climate conditions.
Looking Ahead
The meeting concluded with a commitment to ongoing collaboration. Future stakeholder meetings and participatory workshops will focus on advancing Murcia's green infrastructure strategy, with community engagement playing a central role. The next JustGreen meeting will be held on March 6 at the Salón Noble of the Moneo Building, where further steps for project implementation will be discussed.
