Lecture & Local Stakeholder Meeting #1 - City of Katowice

Katowice recently hosted two key events that brought together experts, stakeholders, and the community to discuss equitable urban greening and climate adaptation as part of the JUSTGREEN project. These initiatives underline the city's commitment to tackling climate challenges while fostering inclusivity and innovation.
On October 30, a stakeholder meeting was held at the Municipal Greenery Department. Representatives from the working group revisited outcomes from their previous gathering in Szopienice-Burowiec, which included input from local communities and stakeholders. Updates were shared on the project’s progress, including highlights from the second partner meeting hosted in Athens on the 16th and 17th of October. Discussions focused on advancing the project’s implementation, with a special emphasis on a potential pilot project at the "Plac Powstańców Śląskich" tram stop in Szopienice. This initiative aims to integrate climate adaptation solutions into the urban environment, showcasing the transformative potential of green infrastructure.
In addition to these plans, the group prepared for Climate Week celebrations. Two key activities were announced: a lecture on November 21 by Chuma Mbambo-Lado, expert at our JUSTGREEN advisory partner Erasmus University Rotterdam, and a community event on November 23 featuring bulb planting near the Psychiatric Hospital in Szopienice.
Chuma Mbambo-Lado’s lecture on November 21, titled "Justice Centered Climate Adaptation", captivated participants at the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Silesia. Chuma delved into the pressing climate challenges facing European cities, emphasizing the need for fair policies to address urban greening. Her presentation stressed the importance of equitable climate strategies that prioritize vulnerable communities. Participants also engaged in workshops, further deepening their understanding of just adaptation.
These events foster collaboration between partners and stakeholders while also highlighting Katowice’s efforts in exploring innovative, inclusive climate solutions. By integrating JUSTGREEN project insights with local initiatives like the Municipal Climate Change Adaptation Plan and the Municipal Revitalization Program, the city is making important steps towards sustainable urban development.
Through its forward-thinking approach, Katowice continues to inspire and learn from other European cities to adopt fair and impactful measures in their fight against climate change.
