Region Sud 4 SGM

The fourth stakeholders meeting of the INERTWASTE project in Région Sud took place on 27 January. It reviewed progress, shared best practices, and prepared for future steps, particularly integrating circular economy principles into public policies. Representatives from Valobat, Eurovia, Arcelor-Mittal, Grand Avignon, Filiater, and Région Sud participated, with additional input from Euroméditerranée.

Good practices

After a summary of the TLJ3 in Marseille, Région Sud engaged with its stakeholders to identify several good practices that could be integrated into the INERTWASTE project. As a reminder, two good practices are already published on the website:

  • Deconstruction and Reconstruction in Six-Fours-les-Plages (France)
This project, initially presented at TLJ 2, involves deconstructing and reconstructing a school and a gymnasium while reusing inert waste. Materials were carefully sorted and repurposed, ensuring that circular economy principles were fully integrated into project management.
  • Rehabilitation of the Menudelle Quarries in Fos-sur-Mer (France)
Presented in Slovenia, this initiative has attracted significant interest, particularly from the Navarre region. The project aims to restore steppe grasslands using inert waste and former agricultural soils.

Three additional good practices are currently being finalised, with the input of stakeholders:

  • Valobat – Extended Producer Responsibility and Construction Waste Management

  • Construction Using Earth Blocks and Earth Concrete – Charleval Health Center (France)

  • Supporting Public Project Owners in Région Sud

Following discussions during the stakeholder meeting, two additional good practices will be proposed:

  • Eurovia / Mat’ild Circular Economy Strategy (France)

  • ECOCEM / ARCELOR MITTAL

Preparation of TLJ4 in Denmark

Two best practice presentations from Région Sud are expected during the upcoming TLJ in Guldborgsund:

  • "From inert waste management to circular recovery: Presentation of the global strategy developed in Région Sud and the OGEO concept expanded in France."
  • "Creating synergies between building sites and local players to optimize material reuse and promote circular economy principles at the territorial scale of Greater Avignon."

Pilot Project Applications in Région Sud

A key discussion point in the meeting was the launch of pilot actions to test innovative solutions for inert waste management and the circular economy. Participants received all the necessary explanations to submit project proposal.

Public Policy Improvements & Bilateral Meeting

In 2025, Région Sud will conduct a benchmark study on European public policies related to inert waste management. Key objectives:

  • Analyze policies and regulations from partner regions
  • Identify best practices in incentives and regulations for material reuse
  • Adapt insights for governance improvements in Région Sud

Region Sud and its stakeholders also discussed the possibility to hold a bilateral meeting with a European partner to get input for the policy improvement.
