The Marshal Office of the Lubelskie Voivodeship, Poland
Green Hydra Polish partner, The Marshal Office of the Lubelskie Voivodeship, is the managing authority and coordinator of RIS3 of the Lubelskie Voivodeship. The Lubelskie Voivodeship is carrying out a number of activities to popularize and activate hydrogen in the region. Foremost, it is necessary to point the RIS3 has been included the list of detailed issues which can be linked to hydrogen, for example: lowering the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the industry, increasing the use of renewable energy sources, energy from waste and alternative fuels, development of infrastructure promoting electromobility, innovative energy generation, management, transmission and distribution systems. The Lubelskie Voivodeship is one of the establishers of the Hydrogen Cluster and Circle Circuit Cluster which are part of amplifying the green H2 ideas in region, bearing the mind that these clusters involve leading companies at the forefront of hydrogen use and productionnot only in region but also in Poland.
What are the main ambitions of The Marshal Office of the Lubelskie Voivodeship in the field of the green transition?
According to the „Strategic directions of economic development of the Lublin Voivodeship in the context of the Regional Innovation Strategy”, the green transition is very important in the regional policy development, however, there is still a significant scope for innovation that can improve and reduce the costs of renewable energy technologies. One of the ambitions is to further introduce: improvements in the materials’ science of photovoltaic cells, advances in other major energy sources include new wind energy technologies, advanced biofuels or "third generation" biofuels that use non-food crops, new drilling technologies to gain access to geothermal energy, microbial fuel cells and hydrogen and artificial photosynthesis. With the increase in innovation and implementation of various renewable energy sources, there has been improvement in the use of these energy sources, however, the storage aspects still constitute the challenge.
Renewable energy technologies increasingly rely on digital technologies; hence the key area of future research and entrepreneurship is the digitization of energy systems that become more connected, intelligent, predictable and sustainable. New technologies enable the use of CO2 as a raw material for chemicals and plastics or in installations for processing waste into hydrogen.
What motivated The Marshal Office of the Lubelskie Voivodeship to join Green Hydra and what it can bring to the project?
The main motivation was to analyse, determine and strengthen the regional ecosystem within the renewable energy resources, including green hydrogen. The major, key players are known, however, the research area and small and medium enterprises should be further investigated and, as the part of the implementation of smart specialisations in the Lubelskie Voivodeship, potential links and cooperation ought to be captured and developed. Moreover, as the green hydrogen development is in the initial stage in the region, the project, by presentation of good practices, interregional learning, study visits, creation of mentoring partnerships, can enhance the implementation of activities dedicated to the Green Hydrogen and give recommendations to the Public Authorities who make decisions on the strategic directions of the regional economy.
The Lubelskie Voivodeship can familiarise the project partners with challenges and good practices detected in the region and in consortium of the project. As the Green Hydra is a vivid platform of learning process and acquiring proper skills in renewable energy sector, there is a possibility to present the regional potential during the study visits, present the educational and research background and to discuss the new upcoming ideas and initiatives of green hydrogen applicability in the mobility, transport, heating, fertilizer manufacturing or biogas plants for hydrogen production within the SMEs activities. It is important to highlight, that entrepreneurs need qualified personnel who is necessary to implement advanced and innovative solutions.
What are the benefits Lubelskie Voivodeship hopes to gain from this project?
The project will give an impulse to make steps towards green hydrogen development in the region especially to: channel regional initiatives based on the bottom-up experience within the dialogue with the stakeholders, answer to the challenges and needs enabling the regional green transition and gain the inspiration to establish/adapt/attract the key factors like: infrastructure/skills/knowledge resources/educational base/value chains with key players/ policies including financial instruments/society to the green hydrogen development.
