Bulgarian stakeholders for the project Green Hydra met on September 30th in Sofia to review the first semester activities and plan the next steps.

They have been presented the policies tackled in the other 10 partners’ countries. Different types and levels - national, regional or local - for green H2 development projects policy instruments have been discussed with the representatives of the Ministry of innovations and growth as the policy owner.

The Bulgarian economy has the highest energy intensity in the EU (consumption of energy per unit of GDP is almost three times higher than the EU average), as well as extremely high carbon intensity (4.3 times higher greenhouse gas intensity than the EU average). Decarbonisation in Bulgaria requires the introduction of fundamentally new technologies, which should replace those based on fossil fuels therefore research and innovation (R&I) will play a crucial role for technological transformation, that must be made accessible for SMEs. Bulgaria plans the introduction of hydrogen technologies for SMEs in the entire value chain of green H2.

Stakeholders agreed that Bulgaria needs to ensure a long list of applicable ideas and practices for  transfer to speed up the process of planning new financial measures. A possible pilot financing measure especially for the most lagging region in Europe - the South west region of Bulgaria - has been put on discussion. BAA team has given to stakeholders an overview of the the project and the partnership. Next participants debated on the opportunities to improve the application conditions, the scope of eligible activities, eligible applicants, types of economic activities under the procedures concerning the green hydrogen value chain.
