Kranj, Slovenia [5 October 2023] — The Slovenian partners of GIFT project recently held its first regional stakeholder meeting in Kranj, Slovenia. In this meeting, partners outlined their objectives, concentrating on the integration of green infrastructure within Kranj’s urban framework. The focus was on managing peri-urban forest zones close to Kranj city center and discussing the broader implications for the Gorenjska region.

The discussions covered a range of urban and forest planning topics. Key issues included the challenges of illegal waste dumping near urban areas, the management of invasive plant species, and strategies to tackle urban heat islands through green infrastructure. Additionally, the meeting addressed the need for adapting to changes in forest land use, promoting forest awareness among the public, and the importance of holistic management approaches. Another significant topic was the improvement of connectivity between green spaces in response to climate change, aligning with the objectives of the URBforDAN project.

Looking ahead, the meeting laid the groundwork for future initiatives and milestones for project GIFT. These include preparing a detailed summary of peri-urban forests, planning for a comprehensive green system, and involving experts in studies to improve green infractructure connectivity. A key event, "Forests for Citizens," is scheduled for April 2024, aiming to further engage stakeholders and residents.

This regional meeting marks an important moment for project GIFT in its efforts to promote sustainable and integrated green infrastructure in urban areas, contributing to Kranj’s environmental goals and urban planning initiatives.
