From November 7th to 10th, Fryslân played host to a pivotal event for the GIFT project: the Interregional Stakeholder Meeting and the 2nd PEER Review. Centered around the Frisian Tree and Forest Strategy, this gathering focused on enhancing Fryslân's tree population for effective carbon capture and storage.

The first two days were dedicated to exploring Fryslân's diverse landscapes. Participants engaged in immersive study visits, gaining insights into local maintenance and conservation practices. Highlights included:

  • State Forest Service: Participants delved into innovative nature conservation methods.
  • Local Farming Innovations: A presentation from a farmer managing Green Infrastructure on his land.
  • Meadow Bird Reserve: A discussion on integrating tree growth in bird conservation areas.
  • Policy Insights: An informative presentation on Fryslân’s current landscape planning policies.

The second two days were dedicated to the Peer Review. Here, experts critically evaluated the implementation of the Frisian forest and tree strategy, which is currently organized through existing policies and programmes. This involved discussions with external stakeholders and culminated in the drafting of preliminary advice by the partners.

As we await the comprehensive Peer Review report, the Province of Fryslân already received actionable insights from participants – they could serve to further refine and enhance environmental strategies, and add a significant step in the province’s commitment to sustainable development and conservation.
