Cork City Council receives award for climate action projects
Cork City Council recently received a prestigious European award for its sustainability projects as part of the Local Green Deals and the Intelligent Cities Challenge. Each of the projects are focused on climate action and managing our resources. The projects range from energy efficiency, circular economy, retrofitting, community education and boosting biodiversity.
The deals developed include decarbonisation of large organisations through solar generation and boosting biodiversity by building a green wall. Others have a more social improvement focus by sharing plastic toys among community members. In three months since its launch, the toy library initiative has re-circulated 278 kilograms of plastic through their sharing platform.
The award recognised the highest number of projects and the consistently high standard of quality across the proposals. The Local Green Deals requires each participant to implement at least two-six projects to accelerate the green transition. Cork City private, community and voluntary organisations along with Cork City Council signed twelve deals.
The projects will support the Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission to reach climate neutrality by 2030. It will also contribute to the Frugal Cities Project by enhancing our resource management and ensuring a just transition for citizens in Cork.
