Forests are the lungs of our planet, providing essential resources for industries, economies, and local communities. In the European Union, forests cover nearly 39% of the territory, serving as a cornerstone for economic growth and employment. With over 3.6 million people employed in more than 400,000 forest-based companies—most of them SMEs—this sector plays a crucial role in sustainable development. However, despite its significance, the forest-based industry faces challenges such as fragmented policies, a lack of modernization, and insufficient innovation strategies. This is where FBI4EU steps in.

What is FBI4EU?

FBI4EU (Policies to promote the competitiveness of forest-based SMEs in resource-efficient European regions) is an ambitious European initiative designed to strengthen the competitiveness of forest-based SMEs through better policies and enhanced innovation. By bringing together seven partners from across Europe, the project aims to analyze, improve, and implement strategic policies that will drive modernization and sustainability in the forest-based industry.

Spanning from April 2024 to June 2028, FBI4EU operates under the Interreg Europe program, supporting regions in adopting smarter policies to boost SME resilience and green growth.

The forest-based sector is a key economic driver in Europe, contributing 7% to the EU’s GDP, supporting 3.6 million jobs, and encompassing over 400,000 SMEs. FBI4EU aims to enhance its competitiveness.

Why Does FBI4EU Matter?

The forest-based industry contributes 7% of the EU’s total manufacturing GDP, making it a crucial economic driver. However, the sector is vastly diverse across different regions, each with its own challenges and opportunities. In some countries, policies supporting SMEs in forestry and wood industries are well-developed, while others lack targeted support. FBI4EU aims to bridge these gaps by aligning regional policies with the specific needs of SMEs, ensuring that forest-based industries can thrive while promoting sustainability and innovation.

How FBI4EU is Supporting SMEs

The project focuses on four key areas to drive growth and competitiveness among forest-based SMEs:

1. Developing Smarter Policies

By analyzing existing policies and identifying gaps, FBI4EU helps regional authorities implement strategic improvements that directly support SMEs in the forestry sector.

2. Encouraging Digital Transformation

From smart forestry technologies to data-driven resource management, the project promotes digital solutions that enhance efficiency and competitiveness.

3. Promoting Green Growth & Sustainability

FBI4EU aligns with EU Green Deal objectives, encouraging sustainable practices, eco-innovation, and responsible resource management in the forest industry.

4. Facilitating Knowledge Exchange

By bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers, the project fosters a cross-border exchange of ideas and expertise, ensuring continuous learning and adaptation.

A Vision for the Future

The future of Europe’s forest-based industry depends on innovation, collaboration, and sustainability. With FBI4EU, SMEs gain access to the policies, knowledge, and resources they need to thrive in a competitive, evolving market. By modernizing the sector, improving policies, and embracing sustainable practices, FBI4EU is not just shaping the future of forest-based industries—it’s securing a greener, smarter, and more resilient Europe.
