First Regional Stakeholders Group Meeting in Lithuania

On September 19, 2024, the first Regional Stakeholders Group Meeting for the FBI4EU project was held in Lithuania. Our ambitious initiative, part of the Interreg Europe program, seeks to enhance the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the forest sector while promoting sustainable practices and the principles of the circular economy.
The meeting, conducted remotely via the TEAMS platform, brought together stakeholders from Lithuania, including representatives of government bodies, forest owners, academic institutions, and private enterprises. The discussions focused on introducing the project, forming the Regional Stakeholders Group, and addressing the challenges faced by SMEs as they adapt to the demands of the European Green Deal.

Project Overview
During the first part of the meeting, Dr. Diana Lukminė provided a comprehensive overview of the FBI4EU project. She outlined its goals of supporting SMEs in the forest sector through resource efficiency and sustainable development, while also fostering economic growth. The presentation highlighted the project’s planned actions, the involvement of various European regions, and the support offered to participants. The role of social partners was emphasized as a critical element in achieving the project’s objectives, and participants were encouraged to share their experiences and ideas for collaboration.
Attendees expressed great interest in the initiative, acknowledging the challenges and opportunities it brings. Representatives from different sectors engaged in constructive dialogue, exchanging insights and strategies for addressing the hurdles faced by SMEs in aligning with new regulations and sustainability requirements.

Addressing Challenges
The second part of the meeting focused on the emerging challenges confronting forest-based SMEs in light of the European Green Deal and the shift towards a circular economy. Discussions highlighted the complexity of meeting stricter environmental regulations, such as sustainable forest management and resource efficiency standards. SMEs must also adapt their production processes and invest in modern technologies to comply with these evolving requirements, which can be financially and technically demanding.
Participants also explored the opportunities that the European Green Deal presents. There is a growing demand for eco-friendly and certified products, opening up new markets for SMEs that can meet sustainability standards. EU funding and other forms of support were acknowledged as crucial for facilitating this green transformation, while challenges related to access to qualified staff and the need for workforce upskilling were also addressed.
The meeting served as a platform for participants to share their perspectives on how to navigate these challenges. While some emphasized the burden of adapting to stricter regulations, others pointed out the long-term benefits and growth potential for businesses that embrace sustainability and innovation.

Looking Ahead
The meeting concluded with a sense of optimism and a commitment to fostering collaboration among stakeholders. By working together, participants aim to overcome the obstacles faced by SMEs in the forest sector and build a more sustainable and competitive industry. Organizers expressed gratitude for the active engagement of all attendees, noting that their contributions will play a key role in shaping the success of the FBI4EU project.
