Exploring Responsible Waste Management: CLEAR CITIES Study Visits in Apeldoorn
From February 11th to 13th, 2025, Apeldoorn (Netherlands) will host an exciting three-day Thematic Workshop and Study Visit as part of the CLEAR CITIES project, focusing on Responsible Waste Generation and Management. This interregional event will bring together partners and stakeholders to exchange best practices, explore innovative approaches, and witness firsthand the cutting-edge waste management initiatives shaping a more sustainable future.
A Deep Dive into Waste Reduction and Circular Solutions
The study visits will provide participants with an exclusive look at Apeldoorn’s progressive waste management strategies. Attendees will engage with local experts and explore practical applications of policies aimed at waste reduction, circular economy practices, and carbon footprint minimization.
On February 11th, the journey begins with an insightful city tour led by Circulus, Apeldoorn’s waste management organization. Participants will examine the challenges of waste collection in high-density urban areas, learn about zero-emission collection zones, and explore educational initiatives like "Cruise to Reduce" and Cleanliness Training for Kids. A guided walk through the city will showcase waste collection systems in action, setting the stage for meaningful discussions on best practices.
Inside Apeldoorn’s Waste Management Innovation
The experience continues on February 12th, when the CLEAR CITIES delegation will visit Circulus’ main waste collection and processing facility. Here, attendees will gain insights into Pay-as-You-Throw systems, dynamic waste route planning, and sustainable transportation solutions. A hands-on tour will allow participants to see these innovative methods in operation, demonstrating how Apeldoorn is tackling waste reduction head-on.
The afternoon will feature a peer review session at a site facing waste management challenges—an opportunity for international stakeholders to exchange perspectives and propose solutions. The visit will conclude with an exploration of the Apeldoorn Repair Café, where discarded items are given a second life through community-led repair initiatives, reinforcing the importance of reusability in sustainable waste management.
Collaboration for a Greener Future
This event is more than just a learning opportunity—it is a platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration among cities striving to implement effective waste management policies. On February 13th, project partners will come together for a Monitoring Meeting and Steering Committee to discuss ongoing progress, best practice implementation, and future strategies for enhancing waste management policies across regions.
Through these engaging site visits and discussions, the CLEAR CITIES project continues to drive meaningful change, helping cities develop smarter, more sustainable waste management systems. Stay tuned for updates and insights from the Apeldoorn event!
