Asturias has high ambitions for transitioning towards a circular economy.

The government, industry, and universities are working together to reduce waste by 13% by 2025 (compared to 2010) and 15% by 2030. The current situation: 50% of waste goes to landfill, with 75% of that being industrial waste.

The challenges they face include:
Lack of legislation
Creating new value chains
Gaining societal acceptance for certain technologies
Raising consumer awareness of their impact

In the Asturias region, efforts are focused on industrial CO2 capture techniques, infrastructure to reuse wastewater for industry, improved separation techniques for various waste streams, and the reuse of residual gas.

To exchange ideas and move forward, they are involved in various EU and regional projects.

To accelerate circularity projects, they have established the Asturias Paradise Hub to promote smart cooperation.

What we learned:
✅ Everybody has a role in the transition towards a circular economy, and coordinated cooperation with a clear vision is key!
