Q1: When did you first become conscious of the fact that you wanted to work in a field related to circularity? 

During the transition of the Chemelot site, I realized that circularity is not just a necessity but also a great opportunity. It connects innovation, sustainability, and economic development. The urgency of climate goals made the shift tangible. It became clear that circular thinking is essential to remain future-proof. Since then, I’ve been committed to accelerating this transition. 

Q2: What role does your organization play within the transition towards a circular economy?  

Chemelot Circular Hub acts as a regional catalyst for circular transition. We connect partners across sectors, regions, and borders. Our focus is on raw materials, energy, and collaboration transitions. We initiate circular business models and value chains. We also align public and private efforts for systemic change. 

Q3: According to you, what is the biggest challenge in creating new value chains? 

Creating circular value chains requires deep system change. The challenge is aligning infrastructure, regulations, skills, and funding. Many partners must move together, often beyond their traditional roles. Building trust and shared vision takes time. Without that, innovations stay stuck in pilots. 

Q4: What tips would you like to share with other circular hubs? 

Start small, but think big. Work with motivated partners – the “coalition of the willing.” Keep the structure open and bottom-up. Connect with education and research early on. And above all: give space to pioneers. 

Q5: Which goals regarding circularity do you want to achieve within 3 years from now?  

By 2028, we aim to reduce virgin fossil use at Chemelot by 25%. We want at least 25% of hydrogen use to be CO₂-free. We also strive for a 25% reduction in industrial water use. Another goal is to reduce emissions into surface water by 25%. These goals reflect our commitment to measurable progress.
