In the framework of the 2021-2027 project period, Interreg Europe programme, has approved the cooperation project "GreenSPAS" aimed at improving public policies for thermal spa cities and regions in Europe facing the challenges of climate change. Co-funded by the European Union, it underscores the EU's commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2050 as outlined in the European Green Deal and the Paris Agreement.

The consortium behind "GreenSPAS" comprises eight partners from seven countries, each one of them bringing special expertise and perspectives to the project:

  • La Route des Villes d’Eaux du Massif Central (France) [Lead Partner]
  • European Historic Thermal Towns Association (Belgium)
  • Municipality of Montegrotto Terme (Italy)
  • Viseu Dão Lafões Intermunicipal Community (Portugal)
  • Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship (Poland)
  • Municipality of Baden (Austria)
  • Municipality of Birstonas (Lithuania)
  • Public Institution Lithuanian Innovation Centre (Lithuania)

With a total budget of €1,795,450, "GreenSPAS" aims to address the specific challenges faced by thermal spa cities and regions, promoting sustainability and resilience response to climate change.

Through a structured approach involving interregional exchange of experiences and targeted policy instrument improvements, "GreenSPAS" seeks to identify and implement good practices.

The project will facilitate a structured exchange of experiences through reciprocal improvement analysis, study visits, online interregional thematic workshops, seminars on policy improvement, and dissemination events. Through these activities, "GreenSPAS" endeavors to empower stakeholders with the tools and insights needed to navigate the challenges of climate change while preserving the unique identity and economic viability of thermal spa cities and regions.

The kick-off meeting, held on April 8, 2024, marked the commencement of this collaborative endeavor, with the lead partner, La Route des Villes d’Eaux du Massif Central, moderating the discussions and setting the tone for fruitful collaboration among partners.
