Industrial Symbiosis: Core Elements and Implementation Approaches
In December 2018, the CEN Workshop Agreement for industrial symbiosis was drafted, thus bringing this concept higher to EU agenda. The Workshop has been proposed by four European projects, among them SYMBI. The aim of the agreement is to advance the uptake of industrial symbiosis across Europe and globally by defining core elements and implementation approaches. Industrial symbiosis represents untapped economic potential and opportunity for European and global industry. The absence of common understanding of this concept made exploitation of industrial symbiosis more difficult. The CEN Workshop Agreement sets a consensus on the core elements of industrial symbiosis as well as on good practices approach. Having certain level of common understanding, this agreement can serve as a basis for further policy-making, recommendation and implementation processes.
