Statistics reveal that succession of business ownership between generations can be a life -or-death situation for many companies in Europe: only 30% of family-owned businesses  survive the transition to a second generation while only 10% of them can overcome the  transition to a third generation.  Success Road will address this challenge by helping manufacturing companies of the  textile, clothing and footwear sectors prepare and manage their succession, both in the  context of family successions and when selling to third parties.  The project overall objective is to help project national and regional authorities implement  policies and new succession measures in their operational programmes so that SMEs  can better face the succession phase and secure their future after a change of  ownership. Working to strengthen the overall sustainability and long-term viability of European SMEs will further contribute to the growth of the economy by preserving jobs and  boosting economic growth. Objectives • To analyse the gaps between the current and the desired state of successions and  transfers of companies and examine the parameters and obstacles at play.  • To sensitise regional and local policymakers and civil servants about the problems  and risks of the succession process in order to foster the creation of tools to help business owners withstand the succession process.  • To shape a business-friendly legal and institutional ecosystem by creating incentives  and removing barriers to entrepreuneurship.

Europe has always been a step ahead regarding sustainable transport mode in comparison with the rest of the world and Europe has developed valuable expertise and innovation in the railway sector. That is why, railway is identified in many RIS3. However due to a fierce competition in particular from emerging industries, the whole sector and especially SME are facing big challenges regarding their competitiveness (pricebased vs. innovationbased competitiveness). To tackle this challenge, regions with the help of the EC, put efforts to encourage R&I joint activities (triple helix concept) by offering innovation delivery support in the ERDF OP (direct fundings, cluster policy...). Other initiatives have been launched towards the railway sector but it has been pointed out that SME have specific issues due to the way public transport works, the specificities of its value chain and its market structure (few big companies with thousands of SMEs, few profit margin, low innovation culture, etc.). Taking this into consideration, the RECORD project aims at helping SME to invest more and better in innovation activities by redesigning the regional policy instruments. To do so, we plan individual work to be compared with partnering regions and analyzed. Benchmark and brainstorming sessions with local stakeholders will help draw provenoriented conclusions and develop new approaches together. To have comparability and to be able to share experiences and learn from each other, it is key to admit regional policy structure, industrial environment and clusters differences. Stakeholders engagement in this project is very important as it will be the first time managing authorities, clusters, businesses, universities, other funding organizations, regions etc. are working together early in the political process in the railway sector. This lends credibility and builds solid foundation to develop a framework that will be accepted for implementation.

IMPROVING SMEs COMPETITIVENESS IN REGIONS WITH AN AQUACULTURE BUSINESS ECOSYSTEM More than 90% of businesses in EXTRA-SMEs regions are inland and coastal SMEs operating across and around the aquaculture value chain, contributing to growth and creation of jobs. Along the chain, these economic operators are characterized by systematic weaknesses in reaching international markets and exporting their products. To this end, EXTRA-SMEs will support public authorities to join forces and exchange experiences in a) administrative simplification, b) expansion in new markets, c) innovative value-added product solutions, d) personnel up skilling, and e) resolution of stakeholders’ conflicts of interests. OBJECTIVE EXTRA-SMEs brings together 8 regions from 7 countries, to achieve expansion of rural and coastal SMEs in wider markets for the promotion of their products, through simpler and improved administrative processes, and innovative technologies. EXPECTED IMPACT - Increased capacity of 200 staff of public administrations to effectively support SME competitiveness - 14 million euros unlocked to support projects on the modernisation of the wider network of aquaculture SMEs - Increased awareness and consensus building among the wider aquaculture sector, the workforce, and citizens, to support measures for SMEs internationalisation operating locally (over 1000 individuals). MAIN OUTPUTS & BENEFICIARIES - 8 action plans to improve the addressed policy instruments, benefiting managing authorities and beneficiaries - 4 interregional workshops, 2 site visits and 1 EU-wide policy learning symposium to promote capacity building among partners and stakeholders - 13 policy briefs to transfer lessons learnt to EU public authorities - 1 benchmarking online toolkit for the assessment of the extraversion performance of SMEs - 4 joint thematic studies and analyses reports on territorial needs and pathways for the improvement of SMEs internationalisation.
