The aim of RENATUR is to draw attention to the importance of peri-urban open spaces and their natural heritage to preserve it. Activities, which help us to achieve our aim, are the identification, analysis, dissemination and transfer of good practices and policy experiences into regional policy instruments. In interregional workshops partner regions work together exchanging solutions in the promotion and protection of the natural heritage of PUOS in planning practice.
The aim of our online workshop, organized by University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) on the 13th and 14th of July was to discuss the improvement in the governance of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in the Basque Autonomous Community (CAPV), namely the Priority Axis 6: conserving and protecting the environment and promoting efficiency resources.

The specific challenges to be tackled during the workshop where the identification of:

  1. Methodologies for an integrative landscape management to reduce climate change effect, especially on coastal areas, and favour regeneration and multiple use of the sites
  2. Methods to evaluate the effectiveness of the applied landscape restoration and management approaches.
  3. Methods and approaches to involve the citizens of the area and generate a positive sense of belonging and awareness through sustainable management.
  4. Sustainable management of forestry and compensation strategies to value positively ecosystem services in native forest.


To support our discussions during the workshop, we worked with experts from our partners´ regions: Basque country in Spain, Saxony-Anhalt in Germany, Flanders in Belgium, Hadjú-Bihar in Hungary, Gorenjska in Slovenia and Mazovia in Poland.
