Guldborgsund Municipality held a very successful network meeting at the City Hall on November 7, with very interesting presentations from Upcycling Forum, Roskilde Municipality, the Confederation of Danish Industry and from the educational institution Zealand Business Academy. 29 stakeholders, municipal employees and education representatives participated in the meeting.

Annemette S. Johnsen, Vicechair for Technical, Climate and Environment Committee of Guldborgsund City Council opened the network meeting. She expressed her full support to the important agenda of recycling construction materials that INERTWASTE is leading, and which has great potential for Guldborgsund Municipality and for the green transition globally.

The meeting then continued with the presentation of relevant initiatives:

  • Upcycling Forum digital platform: it provides a shortcut to recycled materials and connects suppliers and buyers of recycled construction materials and provides access to a common and open material bank.
  • Experiences from Roskilde Municipality in building using recycled materials and the circular process for construction materials.
  • The position of the Danish Industry (DI) on the waste and resource industry and the waste systems within building construction.

Following the 3 presentations, an exchange took place on how to increase the number of recycled materials for future construction projects and the need for further training and new training programmes (especially the content and requirement for a future training such as selective demolition, traceability of waste, demolition of structures with PCB and asbestos).

Among the points mentioned during the meeting:

  • A new Danish standard for recycled construction materials has been introduced that makes it possible for static engineers to calculate the load capacity of recycled load-bearing structures. This is an important development which significantly can expand the use of recycled construction materials.
  • The upcoming EU framework on recycling, in particular the Protocol on construction and demolition waste, improved source identification, source sorting and waste logistics and waste treatment. The discussions also included the new CO2 emission restrictions for new buildings
