An independent Organisation with the objective of bridging the gap between academia and industry and inspire innovation, connectivity and growth.
The MTC has a clear vision to inspire Great British manufacturing on the global stage. Their aim is to fast forward growth for transport related SMEs by addressing innovation and challenges like the skills gap, links to Universities and Regional Clusters, together with export growth.
The MTC develops and provides innovative bespoke manufacturing processes and technologies in an agile, low risk environment, in partnership with industry, academia and other institutions.
MTC's members include global manufacturing companies from multiple sectors. Research partners include the University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham, Loughborough University and TWI Ltd. The MTC is part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, supported by Innovate UK. The MTC’s Product Manufacturing Incubator is a hub of innovation, set up to support businesses and bring ideas to market. This unique technology and manufacturing incubation centre provides up-and-coming entrepreneurs, start-ups and businesses with the expertise, tools and space to develop their product in a de-risked environment.
The MTC’s Manufacturing Support Services works with manufacturers to help them embrace the latest technology and improve their productivity to maintain tomorrow’s growth. The team provides specialist support for smaller companies and Innovate UK REACH funding is available for SMEs working with MTC. The MTC is part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult (HVMC), which is sponsored by Innovate UK.

Resources needed

In December 2011, there were 16 industrial members and 44 staff.
Over the following seven years the MTC’s rapid growth has started covering not only R&D but also Training, Advanced Manufacturing Management and Factory Design.

Evidence of success

The MTC has now got over 700 talented employees. During this time they have helped hundreds of companies across a range of industries and over 100 of them have become members of the MTC.

Potential for learning or transfer

The MTC represents an amazing example of how growth can be fast forwarded with innovation.

Sustained interest from international parties highlights the need for similar Institutions across the borders and its potential for transferability.
