Investments in energy efficiency measures by reconstruction of Trakiya University building- a step in the direction of environment friendly future and education
After signing a contract with the National Trust Ecofund for improving the energy efficiency of Trakiya University (Faculty of Engineering and Technology, located in Yambol) a massive reconstruction of the university building was undertaken. The project called “Improvement of educational infrastructure of faculty “Engineering and Technology” at Trakiya University through a package of energy saving measures” is funded by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works through the Operational Program "Regions in Growth" 2014-2020.
Thermal insulation has been installed on the outer walls, floors and roof of the university buildings and the canteen. The depreciated wooden frameworks have been replaced with a new aluminum profiles with interrupted thermal bridge and double glazing with internal K glass, guaranteeing highest energy efficiency in all seasons. 5 pieces of solar panels were installed on the rooftop of the building, directly connected with a new boiler with a volume of 1000 liters. This quantity is enough to satisfy domestic hot water demand of the kitchen unit of the canteen. The old luminaries have been replaced with new energy-saving lamps in all rooms of the faculty.
The renovation has a positive energy saving and environmental effect, achieved as a result of the implementation of the green project, which is expressed in the reduction of greenhouse gases, improvement of the educational infrastructure and comfort in the buildings of the Technical Faculty.

Resources needed

This first step of the renovation of the Trakiya University Stara Zagora – reconstruction of the “Engineering and Technology” faculty is worth 894 402,88 BGN (457 300 EUR). The total value of the university reconstruction amounts to 3 million BGN (app. 1 533 875 EUR).

Evidence of success

The aim of the project is to achieve a positive environmental, economic and financial effect on its end. Moreover, the major state investments in energy saving measures are a good example for the new political course of energy efficiency and diversification. It is expected that the reconstruction of the university buildings will lead to reduction of carbon dioxide by 270 tons per year, improvement of the educational infrastructure and comfort in the buildings of the Faculty.

Difficulties encountered

The contacted renovation started in February 2020. Although the complicated situation with the spread of Corona-virus, the construction works were completed on time at the end of May 2020.

Potential for learning or transfer

Behind this project for renovating the building of Trakiya University, Stara Zagora, Bulgaria by implementing energy-saving measures easily can be recognized the new direction of the policy-makers – investing in energy efficiency, diversification of energy sources and economic and energy saving through initiatives that will pay off in the future. Thanks to the programme "Support for higher education institutions in the Republic of Bulgaria" funded by OP “Regions in growth” already 13 universities have been supported, in order to improve the learning conditions by updating the material base, providing modern equipment and furnishing of the higher schools and optimizing the energy consumption of the university. Thus, this project is an investment in a better future – on the one hand it raises social awareness for the benefits of efficient use of energy and power, on the other hand it guarantees modern and advanced education for the coming generation.
