When the weather changes difficulties in maintaining the desired indoor temp. arise. Housing comp Östersundshem has tested controlled heating based on forecast.
One of our stakeholders, Östersundshem has tested controlling heating of buildings based on forecasts. Two similar buidings from the 60ths. One were the system vere adjusted with manual control accondingly to weather forcasts and one with automatic control connected to weather forecasts provided from an external digital service.

The technology calculates how much energy to be supplied to a building, based on very local weather forecasts. In this case, the technology has been used for heating control, but it can also be relevant in use for comfort cooling.

Practical application of forecast control generally use remote-controlled forecast receivers that send and receive data over GPRS or GSM network. The forecast receiver in turn controls the controllers placed in the building and regulate the heatdistribution.

The automatic control connected to weather forecasts gave a energysaving of the buiding of 9 % and the manual a energysaving of 5%.

Difficulties encountered

Manual control requires time and planning. It is difficult to make reliable analyses, in time, of the weather in advance. However, it can work on a small number of properties. It is most profitable to start with those buildings with the highest energy consumption.

Potential for learning or transfer

Very good. A energy saving technique that is suitable when other energy efficiency measures have been done.
Both manual and automatic control saves energy but the automatic is more efficient.
