UMPI technology is based on power lines as a communications network for data transfer. It can provide real-time data able to activate a wide range of services. It can be also an open network system connecting recharging stations with Smart Grid systems (compatible with Smart-Grid-V2G requirements).

Evidence of success

Public lighting is the third/fourth cost item of a city. This power-line communication technology allows to increase efficiency and service’s quality. The UMPI solutions adopted by public and private organisations are highly scalable and transferable. This means that the UMPI power-line technology can be applied in a village as well as in a big city. In Lazio region, UMPI technologies have been adopted by the Municipalities of Latina and Fondi as a basis for implementing E-stations for EVs.

Difficulties encountered

Lack of budget and skills are the barriers encountered to apply smart technologies. But budget can be reduced even up to 60%: UMPI technology allows to measure the energy consumption in real time, and to enable services such as wi-fi hot spot, surveillance IP cams and information panels.

Umpi power-line technology fully encounters the needs of the local authorities as it ensures high energy efficiency levels, with more than 35% energy saving, and turning the existing network of lampposts into a high speed communication network able to:
