ACS recharging stations provide public & private entities with high reliability and enable owners of EVs to recharge their vehicles with a zero impact solutions
UMPI is an Italian company leader in the production of power-line smart systems and products for outdoor and indoor applications.
Thanks to the Local Area Network (LAN), UMPI's power-line technology enables diverse services for electrical mobility and smart city, without any additional invasive and costly infrastructural works, since existing power grids of lampposts are used. This is ACS (Active Charging System) in which every single service is even more sustainable from the set up to its full operation. Power-line technology is also more rugged and robust than wireless communications, and is less vulnerable either to hackers or any vandalism. ACS (Active Charging System) is considered a good practice as it facilitates the development of the smart city and electric mobility, by exploiting existing infrastructures for public lighting in urban and extra-urban areas.
Stakeholders and beneficiaries of the practice: Local authorities and citizens
The Active Charging System recharging stations provide municipalities, companies, fleets and public services with high reliability and enable owners of EVs to recharge their vehicles. The ease of use of the stations features multiple power supply options. Their robust construction and design make them ideal for outdoor public applications.
UMPI technology is based on power lines as a communications network for data transfer. It can provide real-time data able to activate a wide range of services. It can be also an open network system connecting recharging stations with Smart Grid systems (compatible with Smart-Grid-V2G requirements).
Evidence of success
Public lighting is the third/fourth cost item of a city. This power-line communication technology allows to increase efficiency and service’s quality. The UMPI solutions adopted by public and private organisations are highly scalable and transferable. This means that the UMPI power-line technology can be applied in a village as well as in a big city. In Lazio region, UMPI technologies have been adopted by the Municipalities of Latina and Fondi as a basis for implementing E-stations for EVs.
Lack of budget and skills are the barriers encountered to apply smart technologies. But budget can be reduced even up to 60%: UMPI technology allows to measure the energy consumption in real time, and to enable services such as wi-fi hot spot, surveillance IP cams and information panels.
Potential for learning or transfer
Umpi power-line technology fully encounters the needs of the local authorities as it ensures high energy efficiency levels, with more than 35% energy saving, and turning the existing network of lampposts into a high speed communication network able to:
1) bring EV charging stations;
2) light efficiently;
3) avoid wastes;
4) monitor energy consumptions;
5) charge electrical platforms;
6) connect video cameras and displays;
7) monitor the territory improving its security level.
