On Wednesday 8 September 2021, from 14:00 to 17:00 CET the Policy Learning Platform is hosting an online thematic workshop on innovation for grand societal challenges.
What will it be about?
In the European Union, there is a growing interest to address grand societal challenges, which is changing research and innovation policy dynamics towards challenge- and mission-oriented innovation policies. However, a challenge-oriented approach requires specific public sector capacities to coordinate and provide directionality while having an innovation ecosystem with sufficient scientific and technological endowments to address them effectively.
The Thematic online Workshop will allow participants:
- to discuss and share their experience on promoting innovation related to grand societal challenges, namely health, agri-food, and water.
- raise awareness on the importance of missions and challenge-oriented innovation policies to tackle grand societal challenges.
What is the event format?
Over the course of an afternoon, we will bring to you three consecutive 50-minute sessions.
You will have the opportunity to join an interactive session with two inspiring keynote speakers that will present the state of the art of innovation to address societal challenges.
During the second session, three speakers will present to you their good practices which address societal challenges. You will also be able to ask all the questions you may have during a Q&A session.
The third session will allow you to participate in an interactive online exchange in the form of online “coffee corners”. You will be divided into two different working groups, one on COVID-19 response and one on health, agri-food and water. During this session we invite you to:
- Share with the audience a regional initiative on innovation to tackle grand societal challenges. You can prepare a slide, take the floor and present it to all of us.
- Lead the discussion with the other participants, while our Thematic Experts facilitate the group discussions.
For more information on the speakers and the workshop, check out the agenda.
