On 2 March the Policy Learning Platform is organising an online discussion to discuss fablabs and makerspaces.

FabLabs—Fabrication Laboratory—or Makerspaces 'allow community members to design, prototype and manufacture items using tools that would otherwise be inaccessible or unaffordable such as manufacturing equipment, 3-D printers, digital fabrication machines and computer-aided design (CAD) software' (Lifehacker, 2012).

They can have different policy objectives, such as to promote an entrepreneurial mindset, to facilitate prototyping and proof-of-concept, to facilitate learning and new skills, to promote interactions among quadruple helix stakeholders, to respond to local challenges… The City of Barcelona launched the Fab City Global Initiative to develop locally productive, globally connected, self-sufficient cities.

During the online discussion the Fab City Global Initiative will be discussed among other good practices.

The online discussion is a closed activity and is on invite only. However, the follow-up article with the key learnings will be made available afterwards.
