The Policy Learning Platform online Peer Review on Energy Efficiency and Skills SME programmes will be hosted by the region of Western Macedonia. It will take place virtually on 26 and 27 October 2020.

The Northern Greek Region of Western Macedonia is preparing for a speedy transition out of lignite-based power production and into a sustainable value-adding diversified new economy. One goal of the transition is to save energy through efficiency investments and smarter processes whilst creating new employment opportunities.

New targets and obligations for improved energy efficiency in buildings and companies must be met, and there is a shortage of suitable skills at all levels that needs to be tackled in order to achieve a larger impact. New skills for a new economic activity are also important as many people will lose their jobs through the coal phase-out.

The Region is further looking for streamlined efficiency measures that are suitable for deployment in SMEs. Financing solutions and business models are also in demand.

Peers from other EU regions will therefore present successful initiatives to build energy efficiency skills at all levels (workers in the construction business, installers, engineers, students, consultants, auditors, company owners) and explore that programmes can be deployed to foster efficiency in SMEs, and debate, which of these measures can be introduced and supported by the Region of Western Macedonia.

This activity is invitation only. However, key learnings will be available afterwards, in a follow-up article.
