On 27 and 28 April 2022, the Policy Learning Platform is organising an online peer review for the benefit of the Swedish Environment Protection Agency. The peer review will focus on the governance of pharmaceuticals in the environment including AMR (Antimicrobial Resistance).

What will it be about

The Baltic Sea in Northern Europe is surrounded by nine countries of which eight are EU-member states, and its water catchment area is about four times larger than its surface area. As long as people have lived in the area, the Baltic Sea has provided not only a strong connection between countries but also a source of livelihood.

However, due to typical environmental pressures from human activities such as marine litter and fishing, the Baltic Sea ecosystems have seen drastic degradation. This also included a increase of hazardous substances ending up in the Baltic Sea.

Under the moderation of our thematic experts Astrid Severin and Magda Michalikova, the host would like to convene with experts from across Europe to discuss the challenge of governing pharmaceuticals in the environment. In particular, the host would like to:

  • Collect best practices on legislation and policy development to minimize the spread of AMR
  • Discuss ways of improving codes of good practice in agriculture and water management
  • Develop a truly Systemic understanding and development of a strategic approach to different (policy) solutions to regulate and minimize emissions of antibiotics and AMR to the environment from sludge and manure

This event is invite-only. However, key learnings of the peer review will be published afterward in a follow-up article on the Interreg Europe website.
