2016 was a busy but rewarding year for us. Here are some important milestones from the past year.

130 projects were approved

64 projects from the first call, 66 from the second.

Second call projects were approved earlier than planned after our team evaluated 158 eligible applications.

In March we will open our third call for project proposals.

64 projects started their implementation

These were the first call projects that are just about to report their first activities. Discover the project websites.

Second call approved projects will kick-off in January 2017.

We launched the policy learning platforms

The work continues in 2017 when the full scope of platform services will become available. Have a look.

Our online community doubled in size

Almost 9 000 people are part of the Interreg Europe online community and share their interest in our programme topics: research and innovation, SME competitiveness, low-carbon economy and environment and resource efficiency. Join here.

Joint secretariat welcomed six new employees

Maybe you are interested in joining our team? At the moment we have several open positions.

We organised events. Online and offline.

Over 600 participants from all over Europe joined the second interregional cooperation forum 'Europe, let's cooperate' in Rotterdam to share their experiences and ideas, get inspired, network and get guidance on successful project development. Over 1 100 participated online.

Save the dates for the next edition. The third interregional cooperation forum will be held on 22-23 March 2017 in Malta.

In September the Finance and Communication seminar gathered almost 200 project finance managers, project communication managers, lead partners and first level controllers in Athens.

And not just us, but also our national contact points put together around 30 national or regional information days.

We worked with others

During the European Week of Regions and Cities in October 2016 we organised a workshop where a policy brief outlining pathways to circular economy in cities and regions was presented. The policy brief was procuded together with other European Territorial Cooperation programmes (ESPON, INTERACT and URBACT).

During the same week we also joined the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy to organise a debate on policymaking in 21st century. The debate featured speakers from for instance the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Committee of the Regions (CoR).

In 2016 Interreg Europe participated in various events and discussions initiated by the European Parliament, the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy, the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, the Directorate-General for Environment, the Committee of the Regions, S3 platform and others.

And supported partners and applicants in new ways

Our partners and applicants come from 30 different countries and supporting them online is often the most equal way. In our office studio space we held Q&A session on applying and reporting, recorded instructional videos and organised webinars, briefings and seminars - all online.
