On the 3rd of March 2021, the Eixo Atlântico participated in the "Duerodouro Summit 2021", an event organised by the Iberian Association of Municipalities bordering the Douro (AIMRD) and financed by the Spain-Portugal Cross-border Cooperation Programme (POCTEP), under the Urban System Project focused on Sustainable Urban Development. In his presentation, the Secretary-General of the cross-border organisation Mr Xoan Vázquez Mao highlighted the convenience of promoting sustainability strategies in urban policies and exchanging good practices with other partners. Mr Vazquez Mao used the opportunity to share the institution's experience in developing its Urban Agenda, the first cross-border one in Europe, as well as its recently presented Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, derived from the Urban Agenda and developed within the framework of the Urban System project. Finally, Mr Vazquez Mao emphasised the importance of working in cooperation to achieve better results and, in that context, he underlined the importance of the EURE project and presented one of important intermediate goals achieved until now despite all the limitations imposed due to the COVID19 pandemic – the Regional Report Spain Portugal.

The Secretary-General of the Eixo Atlântico shared with the audience the main findings and conclusions of the Regional Report, a publication containing an exhaustive analysis of the main tools for urban development in Spain and Portugal. The main recommendation for the next generation of the urban development programmes is that needs to reduce regional differences, increasing cohesion and balance between territories, improving competitiveness and production systems linked to their intrinsic characteristics should be addressed.
