Kiel University R&D Centre is delighted to confirm the successful development of three case studies and the implementation of its action plan. 5 suitable companies were identified for the case studies, and after interviews, 3 were selected to work on the Case Studies with the R&D Centre. The R&D Centre did not only gather information but also seized the opportunity to formulate recommendations on how to improve the application process for the funding programme.

Kiel University R&D Centre have said “We are happy that we were able to develop the three case studies and get the approval of the companies we interviewed. In addition, we are proud of the design of the case studies… ”

The following case studies have been published on the platform of the R&D Centre:

  1. Collaborative Project “MAUS” at SubCtech
  2. Innovation assistant at S.M.I.L.E.
  3. Sea & Sun Technology GmbH - Antifouling technology for maritime measuring probes

Collaborative Project “MAUS” at SubCtech

SubCtech is a medium-sized company based in Kiel that has made a name for itself with its innovative products in the field of underwater energy supply and measuring system technology. Its customers include oil and gas companies, as well as research institutions. "MAUS" is a collaborative project with the overall objective to develop and produce two prototypes of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), and SubCtech develops the needed system module. Partners of the project include the University of Applied Sciences of Kiel and emma technologies. The project is managed by the research and development centre of the University of Applied Sciences of Kiel. The application process kicked off in November 2017, with grant confirmation in April 2019, with the project itself running from March 2019 until 2022.

Innovation assistant at S.M.I.L.E.

S.M.I.L.E. Engineering, located in Heikendorf, offers a wide range of engineering services in the fields of shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, industrial and offshore plants, logistics and documentation. An important service of the company is drawing constructions in 2D and 3D format. The required programmes are often difficult to use and do not have a user-friendly interface. The objective of the project is to make it easier to use the software, to improve the design of the graphics and to make the software compatible for other applications, for example the use of virtual reality glasses. The company decided to recruit an employee to work on the standardisation of construction elements within a 3D software to meet the requirements of the customers for a technically flawless, yet appealing design of the construction drawings. Two objectives had to be met before hiring an innovation assistant, the outcome of the project should represent a sustainable enrichment for the company, and, for a successful project, a suitable graduate must be selected.

Sea & Sun Technology GmbH - Antifouling technology for maritime measuring probes

Sea & Sun Technology GmbH, with headquarters located in Trappenkamp, Schleswig-Holstein, develops and produces high-precision underwater probes, which are distributed worldwide. The company conducts intensive research in the fields of oceanography and hydrography and set up the project on the antifouling technique for maritime measuring probes within these activities. As the underwater probes are permanently exposed to the environmental influences of the sea, a biofilm is deposited on the sensitive sensors which distorts measurement results, and small organisms can settle on this biofilm. If the probes become unusable they must be disposed. To prevent this, the probes must be cleaned on a regular basis, which is costly to the user. The new antifouling technology is designed to slow down or completely prevent the process of contamination and Sea & Sun’s current research includes different experiments including with ultraviolet light. The company applied for funding to secure the financing of the extensive project. The application process was launched in September 2017, whilst the project started in June 2018 and concluded at the end of November 2020.
