1) Who are you ? Introduce yourself and your functions in your company in a few lines ?

Hi! I’m Nicola Careddu. My background is in Mining Engineering with a Ph.D. in Geoengineering. My scientific research deals with advanced technologies for natural stones quarrying and processing, recovery and utilization of stone scraps (as secondary raw materials), mine planning and sustainability.
Currently, I’m associate professor of “Surface Mining and Dimension Stone” at University of Cagliari, Italy. Moreover, I’m currently head of the project “Reduction of marble waste landfills through the enhancement of CaCO3”, supported by Regional Authority of Sardinia.

2) Explain us your circular project in a few lines ?

The project is aimed at the reduction of amount of marble waste, that is currently placed to landfill, through the recovery and enhancement of limestone micro-fine sawdust of, mainly deriving from the sawing and processing of carbonate dimension stones.
Therefore, the ultimate goal of this study, in a circular economy perspective, is to identify other alternative use -which has a high added value- than landfilling, solution so far preferred but not more compatible with the concept of sustainable development.

3) Did the CIRCE project allow you to meet interesting partners to optimize / go on / develop / even sell your project ?

Surely. During the “Lower Silesia Workshop”, I had some interesting feedback from people of various European countries, especially from Poland, France, UK and Spain.

4) How did you know about the Circe project ?

Dr. Alessandro Dacomo, who is the Project manager of Circular Economy project CircE, has contacted me because Lombardia Region needed someone with expertise in raw materials and reuse of mining/quarrying waste. I was very glad about it: the “Lower Silesia Workshop” has been a productive experience for me!
