On 30th June & 1st July Spanish partners of BID-REX attended to the Regions for Biodiversity: achieving the Aichi targets, an international conference held in Barcelona and organized by the Government of Catalonia with the support of Network of Regional Governments for Sustainable Development (nrg4SD).

The Government of Catalonia and Basque Government took part in the conference as members of the nrg4SD, a network which connects regions to exchange experiences and find solutions in order to promote a sustainable development. Moreover, the Forest Science Centre of Catalonia was invited as a relevant regional stakeholder to achieve the Aichi targets in Catalonia.

Considering the theme of the conference and the partners’ involvement, the BID-REX take advantage of the conference to disseminate its mission through the exhibition of roll-ups during the poster session.

During the conference, regions from everywhere explained their success and problems to achieve the Aichi targets in some different panels organized around the Aichi Strategic Goals.

The main conclusions of the conference were:

  • Local and Regional authorities have a key role into the achievement of Aichi targets. They are close to the citizens and they have the competences to create Action Plans, although after that these plans have to be implemented.
  • Stakeholders are also important for the achievement of Aichi targets. Their involvement since the first stage of projects can be an important revulsive to get projects’ objectives.
  • To ensure the society engagement for biodiversity, more communication tools are necessary. Communication teams must be multidisciplinary in order to communicate more and better; and communication must have an important role in any biodiversity project, with the aim to transmit the biodiversity importance to citizens.
  • Biodiversity conservation has to be included in any sectoral plan and solutions based on nature have to be developed.
